When we examine the world’s attractions by average daily attendance, we see the dominance of fairs and festivals, which draw crowds no theme park comes close to. Fairs regularly entertain 100,000 to 200,000 visitors daily, a record 2-4x that of Magic Kingdom, the world’s highest attended theme park.
We previously covered World’s Fairs, whose visitation records are unmatched more than a century later, as well as the economics of temporary exhibits – and the lessons from both apply. The “fair” business model is that of a landlord-host offering ground leases to its vendors and concessionaires. It is thereby incentivized to draw as many visitors to its grounds, and accomplishes this by keeping gate fares as low as possible. Combined with the event’s seasonality and relative novelty (appearing only certain times during the year), it does much to spike attendance within a compressed timeframe. Mexico’s Feria de León averaged 248,148 visitors a day across its 27-day run in 2025, and the Jakarta Fair averaged 236,000 over 25 days. That is roughly five times the daily crowd at Magic Kingdom, the world’s most-visited theme park, which averaged 48,768. The pattern holds down the list – the Minnesota State Fair (161,739 a day), the Calgary Stampede (147,029), Houston’s Livestock Show and Rodeo (118,943), Milan’s Artigiano in Fiera (111,111) and the Iowa State Fair (105,466) each average more than double Magic Kingdom’s daily crowd.
Attendance over the entire calendar year, however, is a different story. Walt Disney’s original intention for Disneyland was to create a sort of “permanent World’s Fair”, and with respect to visitation, he succeeded. Since they never close, Disney parks over the past few decades have racked up cumulative attendance figures in the hundreds of millions, and no other attraction type in the world comes close to the drawing power of a major theme park.
Global Village and Harbin are interesting cases, because they show what happens in between. Dubai’s Global Village runs a 215-day season and drew 10.5 million visitors, more than any other fair in the set, but almost exactly Magic Kingdom’s average daily figure. Harbin Ice and Snow World, open 68 days, averaged 52,353. Basically once an event stretches out its season, its daily crowd settles to theme-park levels.
